- Best Low Purine Foods For Dalmatians
Purines are a type of protein that's commonly found in some meats like pork, veal, duck, venison, game meats, livers and organs, some seafoods such as sardines, herring and haddock. So if your a new Dal owner with an HUA puppy, be prepared to start spending more time reading ingredient labels for food in high purine. Since Dalmatians have a genetic predisposition to forming stones due to their unique liver and kidney chemistry, high purine diets can lead to urinary crystals. Urethral obstruction isn't only painful but can also be life threatening. This issue more commonly effects males more then females. High purines can cause liver disease, Endocrine and metabolic conditions such as diabetes or even hypertension. Most dal owners opt for chicken, lamb, white fish, or turkey as a preferred meat diet. LOW PURINE FOODS Carrots Potato Grains (such as rice) Eggs (in moderation) Oatmeal Zucchini Chicken Turkey Lamb Fish Parsnips Best Dog Foods I've Found I read once that the first five ingredients are the most important. So spending 15 minutes in the Walmart looking at ingredients and comparing prices and 20 minutes in PetSmart reading ingredients and comparing prices, I came to the conclusion, the better ingredients are more expensive. Well worth your pets health. Spending the extra money on food could save you a couple thousand at the vet. One thing I found irritating is the dog food you see in commercials or being advertised on store windows or in reviews like Purina Pro Plan or Rachel Ray, have the worst ingredients for Dalmatians. I know not everyone has Dalmatians and yes those foods are high in protein but the ingredients are trash and the prices are ridiculous when you can get a bigger bag with better ingredients for $5-$10 more and sleep sound at night knowing you don't have to wake up to your dog becoming obese with age or developing urinary or kidney stones or any other medical issue caused by high protein meats. Just my opinion. I will be doing a separate blog going into more detail about the meats they put in pet food. Here is a list of Dog Food I found very appropriate for Dalmatians, remember, you will never find that perfect dog food but the better the low purine ingredients the better the health of your dog! So hopefully this will save you some time at the store. Authority salmon and rice (sensitive skin and stomach) - PetSmart Blue Buffalo Chicken and Rice -Walmart and PetSmart Wellness complete health (purple bag) -PetSmart Nulo Medal Series (salmon- blue & black bag- or all life stages) - PetSmart NUTRO ULTRA (Blue & white bag large breed- chicken, lamb, salmon) -PetSmart Tractor Supplies "Wholesomes" has a few good ones as well I will be editing and posting a lot more as i learn and experience more myself to help others.
- Does Your Dog Need Purines?
Doesn't matter what kind of dog breed you have, every dog requires a certain purine. Whether it be low, moderate or high. A lot of people confuse purine with protein. Its not the same thing. Yes your dog needs a CERTAIN purine. Certain breeds require a different kind. Have you been feeding your dog table scraps? Check the charts and check with your vet. If your vet doesn't know what purines are, I highly suggest you find another vet. After viewing the chart, your next step is to make sure your dog is not allergic to anything. A good example with this chart would be to think about how big your dogs stomach is. -How much kibble should your dog eat during each feeding? -Are you feeding your dog more than he/she should be eating? -Is your dog overweight? -Are you adding moisture to the food? (aka adding water) Replacing half the kibble with these foods can help health in so many ways. Go to the freezer section in your local grocery store and buy a 4 pound bag of broccoli or mixed veggies for $3. and add that as a substitute in your dogs food rather then more kibble. Lots of dog foods have bi products and 4d meat which is not for human consumption so they put it in dog food, which will eventually kill your dog and has no nutritional value. ALWAYS CHECK THE FIRST 5 INGREDIENTS IN YOUR DOGS FOOD! What's a Good Dog Dinner Recipe? My personal preference is "4Health Salmon and rice or chicken and rice formula" from Tractor Supply or "Authority salmon and rice all life stages" from PetSmart. YES, some dogs can have wild rice & grains! It contains more fiber and less calories, fat, and carbs than white or brown rice. I will discuss grains in a future blog. What I do is I put 2 -3 cups of kibble in a bowl, mix in some boiled broccoli (broccoli has more protein then beef), cooked carrots (great for eyes), flaxseed, hempseed, quinoa, (or wild rice) and i drizzle some low sodium chicken broth or some honey. My dogs all eat low purine and they are fit, healthy, never a gout, uric acid, or stomach problem or vet visit for a health concern in 6 years. Sometimes I bake chicken breasts in quinoa, flax and honey. I break everything up into little pieces and refrigerate it for the week and mix it with their food every dinner. They get a multi vitamin once a week by "authority". Some days they do eat just straight kibble but 8 times out of 10 i do cook them dinner since my kids are all about the air fryer. The dogs appreciate me more. Haha. Broccoli and carrots and spinach are my GoTo mixes though with my kibble. I will list at the bottom of this blog my top favorite links to the best information I could find on the internet to help you guys to study more about these facts. - Whelping Supplies I use
I always prep months in advance just so I know I have all and any necessary supplies and my favorite products i use before, during and after whelping. Some of these things still stay useful during the pups growth in weeks to come. I do not use whelping pens, I feel the prices are absolutley ridiculous for some cardboard plastic, although i will be having my fiance build some out of PVC in the near future. For the past 5 years, my closet or DIY ideas have been working just fine. The "fencing" i use I'll list below and is also great for the puppies once they start walking and more convenient to set up and take down and move around if i want or try different ideas. Up until they're at a certain age i keep blankets i purchase from the salvatian army, covering the cage with simple clams on bottom and top for mom to have privacy and have softness to lay her head against instead of hard plastic. Everything i get is from Amazon because its easier to create my Dog wish list and have everything organized in one spot so i can re order later if I need to. (links to the EXACT products I use are highlighted below. I will also post more example photos on my next whelping so everyone can see. --First I start by laying down 2 layers of washable pads (from Amazon) --Then another 2 layers of regular disposable puppy pads . I dont use the Large or XL during whelping because moms like to dig and with all the mess going on they're easier to remove and replace quickly. WHY SO MANY PADS you ask? So once whelping is done, i remove the disposable puppy pads so mom has a comfy regular one to relax on. The following day, i'll remove that one and the first layer i put down will be there so that way I dont have to move her or the puppies to clean an area and she can relax and bond and sleep for a day or two afterwards. But I do prefer washable pee pads the first 3-4 weeks for all litters, not only is it more comfortable for them and easier for me to just wash and re use but ALSO- because it helps me indicate when their first nail trimming will be. Because the more they grow, their nails grow and once at a certain length they start getting stuck or pulling tiny pieces of fabric from the pad which shows me its time for nail trimming! --After I have all that done i use my 24" portable fencing to make an enclosed area near my bed (with blanket clipped for her privacy, so i can keep an eye on mom and help her through whelping. I love this not only because its light weight and portable but also i can use it for the puppies in any room or outside once their big enough. Some people do prefer to use a whelp box , <- which this one i found a reasonable price and looks great. Some also prefer the pool type . -- Have your Latex gloves ready, & I usually switch off after each puppy. Have your trash can by your side, some 2-3 towels & a laundry basket or small box with a blanket in it. Alcohol is a must with umbilical cord scizzors in case mom needs help or the pups isnt being fully pushed out and needs detached from mom. This is very important to help avoid any hernias. None of my puppies have ever had one. -- Once whelping starts and shes in her motion, i give her a tiny Bit of Breeders Edge calcium Paste to help delivery go smoothly. And the reason I chose that specific paste is because I used "DogZymes" brand before and my dogs hated it and wouldnt eat it. I like to give mom a relaxing slow massage from the neck with my pointer and index finger massage down her spinal muscles to her butt to help ease contractions and this has helped amazingly to where she just lays comfortably and pushes instead of walking all over the place being anxious. The love and comfort keeps my girls in a calm relaxed state which makes birth go so smoothly. One of my dogs litter of 10 went so smoothly, they were popping out like skittles every 20 minutes to an hour and within 2 hours after giving birth, mom was outside trying to play ball. HAHA! --If i sense a puppy is showing signs of weakness, a little bit of Breeders Edge colostrum has shown quick results. Thankfully I only had to use it twice. ALWAYS keep rubber suction syringe balls handy in case you need to get any fluids out of newborns nose and mouth so they can breath! I keep different sizes for my different breeds. -- Once each puppy is born and cleaned by mom I use a small scale to weigh them and i write each one down and mark their tail with a lipstick or a dot of nail polish so i know whose who. In between birthing i have pups feed from mom to get milk flowing, while birthing i put the pups in a small basket with a puppy safe heating pad under the blankets, (make sure its low enough where mom can still touch them with her face, but be cautious as she might try to get in with them. If there are more then 5 puppies and they just keep coming then i do keep them in a puppy incubator so mom doesnt get overwhelmed. it really all depends on the dog, her anxiety & comfort levels, so i know what to do and not do for her pleasure as I want theyre experiences and bond with me to be the best. --I do not use whelping collars until theyre a week old. If theres only 3-5 i dont use collars at all because I know whose who. However with the larger puppies once they get about 5 weeks old i do love to use These puppy collars to match their original whelping collars . I personally like these whelping collars for the smaller dogs because their adjustable. (Thats basically it for my whelping routines, if i forget anything I'll be sure to come back and add it in. I'll discuss more about my routine care for growing puppies, and EVERYTHING else in some other blog posts. So stay tuned.
- Natural & Safe medicines for Dogs
So I hate leaving the house, and I liked to stay stocked up on all my dogs necessary needs. I dont always agree with putting drugs into my dogs bodies if they dont absolutley need it. I prefer to order supplies online in bulk so i can keep everything organized so I know what i need and dont need. For example, Dream had an allergy rash on her inner thigh for a week, noticed it getting worse, then i saw a plant based salve cream my girlfriend had got me one year as a gift and i was reading about the herbal ingredients online and their uses. So while dream was sleeping, i rubbed it on her thighs and it was 100% gone the next day! A couple days later she had a routine vet visit with 3 of my other dogs and I told the vet about it, and he said "if you can use herbal remedies to fix these little problems, i definitely would not advice against it because I wont lie to you, allergy medicine isnt cheap." When he said that, i decided to do more digging and reading and research that weekend. Which leads me to my 'AMAZON FINDS"!! I still keep everything saved to my "DestinationDalmatian WIshList" so i can keep reordering. This is just HALF of what i have saved, lol. Now, we now live an hour to an hour and a half from the closest 3 emergency vets! Our 2 main vets are 45 minutes away. So we're ALMOST kind of on our own at this point as far as emergency care goes. It's also great to have these available in case there's another pandemic. YES I EVEN CALLED THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE in my area! =( So supplementing my dogs with the best remedies I can find with home testings and having stocked on what they would need, these essentials are my back up plan. ALSO! To find supplements with NO added SUGARS and NO added yeast were a little difficult to come by. My Favorite Herbal supplements From Amazon (click images to be redirected to Amazon product)
- The Dog Solution
Another new front-end product is The Dog Owner's Secret Handbook . This book is a massive collection of different dog training tips, dog hacks, and dog health remedies. It's a high-converting offer that's designed to help as many dog owner's as possible. Most dog-related programs only focus on dog training (using a leash, potty-training, etc.). This is only a small segment of the total population of dog owners. That's where this specific program shines. Its offered to the ENTIRE population of dog owners... instead of just the small percentage who are interested in training. Stop and think: Do you know WHY your dog is barking? I promise you it's not just for fun. There are some psychological reasons behind their behavior. You just need to determine what that reason is before you can stop it from happening. Your dog is not the only one who loves to bark. Millions of folks just like you have experienced the exact same problem. Except, they now know how to stop this bad behavior. To begin, you need to know WHY your dog is barking. It's typically due to one of two possible reasons. Before you can stop the behavior, you have to know the reason. Another good example, do you know WHY your dog is digging? I sure don't. two of my 5 dogs love digging. I followed steps from this program a few moths ago and so far one has stopped digging. I wont tell the secrets until you decide to check it out and try for yourself. I will be doing more work with Disney this summer on his digging issues with more help from this program. I highly recommend it.
- Brain Training for Dogs
About The Product The Brain Training for Dogs member’s area is jam-packed with information owners can use to train their dog in the most effective way. It includes a puppy training section, two online training courses to boost intelligence, obedience, and behavior, over 100 articles tackling a huge range of behavior problems (as well as doggy behavior and psychology), and a private forum frequented by Adrienne. She is also a CPDT-KA certified dog trainer with many years of experience, so you can be safe in the knowledge that everything she teaches is safe and effective. Many other dog training programs online (even some of the best known ones) are created by fraudsters with no professional certifications – their advice is often ineffective, outdated or downright dangerous. Adrienne is an advocate of gentle and force-free training techniques which rely on positive reinforcement instead of punishment. Unlike many other training programs online which use outdated aversive training methods, Adrienne’s techniques cause dogs to look forward to learning, and further strengthen the bond between dog and owner. What I'm trying to do is help improve the lives of dogs around the world by shifting owners away from outdated and unfortunately common punishment-based methods. I've listed some video examples below. Turn Your Dog into A Genius 2. Curing Maggie’s Jumping - ( This video shows part of her training protocol for dogs who jump.) 3. Curing Sadie’s Whining- ( Watch over over Adrienne’s shoulder as she treats whining in a rescue dog.) In a statement from a veterinary advisor, "Today's dogs lack mental stimulation and quality time with their people. The resulting boredom and anxiety can lead to no end of physical and behavioral problems. Adrienne Farricelli provides owners with a clear and c oncise guide to the puzzles and exercises that will challenge and entertain dogs of all ages." There's a lot on the website to check out and review. Click any of the links above to check it out! I plan myself on getting this program this spring.
